When Jimmy Nardello’s parents emigrated from the Basilicata region of Italy in 1887, they like many others brought seeds.These Italian sweet peppers are probably one of the best tasting peppers you’ll ever taste. Fry them with some seasoning in olive oil and you won’t be able to stop eating them. These easy to grow, prolific 3′ plants produce amazing amounts of elongated red sweet peppers, that are great for salads, salsas, stir frys and even pickling.

Growing Directions

Sow seeds 1/4″ deep indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors in full sun 3′ apart in a sheltered area or greenhouse. Harvest often for continued pepper production all season. Benefits from manure or compost amended soil.

Originally from Asti, Italy, this sweet yellow pepper, grows on 3′ tall bushes and is a heavy producer. A favourite of chefs and garden markets, this blocky thick fleshed pepper offers an abundance of flavour for any pepper lover. Grows well outdoors in a sheltered warm location and even better in a greenhouse. Peppers ripen from green to yellow and can be enjoyed either colour.

Growing Directions

Start indoors 1/4″ deep 6 weeks before transplanting outside. Transplant outdoors to soil temperatures of 15+ degrees with an ambient temperature of 20 degrees. Space18-24″ apart in full sun. Minimum 6 hours of sun per day, and organic fertilizer/compost are beneficial.

Originating in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, these 3″ long peppers grown on 2′ plants produce loads of peppers great for salsa, guacamole,poppers or smoking into chipotles. Most popular when harvested green but milder, and then get hotter upon ripening to red. Jalapenos are also known for high amounts of vitamin C which also increases as they turn red.

Growing Directions

Sow seeds indoors 1/4″ deep 4-6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outside when temperatures are no less than 15 degrees at night. Harvest when peppers are 3″s and green or wait to ripen and turn red.Cut peppers off instead of pulling. Add organic fertilizer to aid in production.

Chocolate Pepper

Introduced in 1965 by the University of New Hampshire Agricultural Experimental Department, this sweet pepper packs the flavour you want, that most chocolate peppers lack. Turning from green to chocolate brown when ripe, these produce copious amounts of 5″ long, 3 lobed peppers, so much so they may require support. The medium thick flesh is a burgundy color inside. They are also great for short season areas and can even handle cooler nights. Looks fantastic when mixed with other sweet peppers in salads and other fresh dishes.

Sow seeds 1/4″ deep, indoors, 6 weeks before last frost Transplant outdoors 20-24″ apart in full sun, when ground is warm and all chance of frost has past. Peppers will ripen from green to brown, either on the plant or off. Benefits from compost amended soil. May need support as they are heavy producers and may have anywhere from 8-20 peppers per plant.
