Originating in Northern Asia and Siberia, and now predominantly grown in Japan, these long hollow topped onions are sweet, savoury and mild, and are great in egg dishes, or on top of potatoes, salads, whitefish, soups and pair well with cream sauces. Easy to grow and don’t need a lot of attention.

Growing Directions

Sow seeds 1/4″ deep, 3″ apart, in full sun when all chance of frost has past. Will not form bulbs and grows to 12-15″ high. Prefers organic compost amended soil.

Known for there 12-15” green tops, that are among the most sought after anywhere for their delicious flavour and tenderness. Beet tops are often used as a replacement for cooked or raw spinach, but these are the cream of the crop. The red root is a flat globe and are good pickled or cooked.

Growing Directions

Sow seeds ½” deep, 3” apart, in full sun, when ground is workable in spring. Thin to 6”. Sow 2nd crop a month later for continued harvest of tops. Benefits from compost amended soil.
